The Adult Education Committee is responsible for all municipal adult education in Göteborg. It is a local public authority, funded by the City of Göteborg and the government. The field of responsibility is:
Municipal adult education (“Komvux”): Basic education, corresponding to compulsory school and upper secondary courses. Komvux also offers continuing education programs, which provide specialized skills in a particular occupational field.
Education for persons with learning disabilities (“Särvux”): Basic education and non-compulsory education corresponding to upper secondary courses for students with learning disabilities.
Swedish for immigrants (“SFI”): Designed to provide newly arrived immigrants with knowledge of the Swedish language and the Swedish society. Municipalities have an obligation to offer SFI to new adult immigrants.
The Adult Education Committee in Göteborg does not run the courses itself. All education is procured from 11 different providers (private and public schools). The main responsibility is to plan and deliver adult education for the citizens of Göteborg. It means that the Committee is responsible for the policies regarding content and design of supplied adult education in Göteborg.
The Adult Education Committee has a neutral guidance center free of charges for future and present students. The guidance centre gives the customer help and advice about courses and needs in the labour market if he/she wants to become a student. The Adult Education Committee has about 85 staff members, supplying 600 courses and 130 educational programs. During 2008 the Adult Education Committee had a total of 26 869 students.
The Committee will contribute to the development of a common methodology for the identification of good practices regarding the development of linguistic training for the employment and exchange own experiences concerning the matter of the project.
