LILAMA Network has attended the “Europeanization and Globalization” international conference, which was held in Bordeaux, 2-3 December 2010.

The aim of the conference was to analyse the relationship between Europeanisation and globalisation, Europeanisation being defined as the convergence of approaches among European countries, within the framework of EU policies.

Raised issues included: How do ideas and public policies circulate between the global, European, national and regional levels? To what extent do world standards impact “European good practices”? How do culture and geography combine, in the debate between Europeanisation and globalisation ? What are the limits to the enlargement of the EU ? Where are the borders of Europe ? How far does this influence the European Neighbourhood Policy? What is the geo political dimension of “European identity “?

The conference attracted researchers from universities in the United States,  Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom and France. Conference themes included social policy, language, migration and geopolitics.

The conference allowed two LILAMA researchers to deliver presentations. One was entitled “Europe's linguistic policy discourses put to the test by globalization: values and economic issues”. The other one compared EU and Council of Europe university language policy recommendations in the framework of Spolsky’s language management theory.

The “Europeanization and Globalization” conference was organised by “Europe, Européanité, Europeanisation” research laboratory from the University of Bordeaux. The laboratory gathers social science researchers from various backgrounds (cultural studies, languages, political science, law and economics).
